Food and beverage sales up
The total income generated by the food and beverages industry rose 4.2% year-on-year (y/y) in November 2011 to R3.75 billion, according to data published by Statistics SA (Stats SA) on Monday, 23 January. The increase in the first eleven months of 2011 was 4.8% y/y.
The main contributor was takeaway and fast-food outlets (10.2% y/y) followed by restaurants and coffee shops (2.5% y/y).
The total income generated for the three months ended November 2011 rose by 4.7% y/y. The main contributor to this increase was food sales (6.2% y/y).
Food inflation at consumer level rose by 11.1% y/y in November indicating that the volume of food sold probably fell by more than 5% y/y.
