The North West public safety department urged residents on Monday, 7 November 2011, to the return toxic salt they picked up after a goods train overturned at Mahikeng station, it said.
"The salt is poisonous and we warn them against using it for consumption, spokesman Lesiba Kgwele said.
He said many people rushed to the scene and collected the salt after the accident earlier in the day. Some of them loaded the salt onto bakkies, unaware it was poisonous.
Kgwele said no one would be punished for returning the salt.
The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.
"Police are still working on the scene. No one was injured," he said.
