The CSIR's newly formed Mobile Intelligent Autonomous Systems (Mias) group targets niche areas that address national needs and which are of relevance to South African society. One of the more contentious aspects of robot-development is that of social implications - notably, the impact of autonomous systems on jobs, which is an extremely sensitive issue in South Africa.
