June 2011 US mobile subscriber market shareRESTON, US: comScore, Inc has released data from the comScore MobiLens service, reporting key trends in the US mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending June 2011. ![]() The study surveyed more than 30 000 US mobile subscribers and found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 25.3% market share. Google Android continued to gain ground in the smartphone market reaching 40.1% market share in June. OEM market shareFor the three month average period ending in June, 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices. Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 25.3% of US mobile subscribers (up 0.8 percentage points), followed by LG with 21.3% share (up 0.4 percentage points) and Motorola with 14.5% share. Apple strengthened its position at #4 with 8.9% share of mobile subscribers (up 1.0 percentage points), while RIM rounded out the top five with 7.9% share.
Smartphone platform market share78.5 million people in the US owned smartphones during the three months ending in June 2011, up 8% from the preceding three month period. Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with 40.1% market share, up 5.4 percentage points. Apple strengthened its #2 position with 26.6% of the smartphone market, up 1.1 percentage points from the prior reporting period. RIM ranked third with 23.4% share, followed by Microsoft (5.8%) and Symbian (2.0%).
Mobile content usageIn June, 69.6% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up 1.0 percentage points. Browsers were used by 40.1% of subscribers (up 1.5 percentage points), while downloaded applications were used by 39.5% (up 2.2 percentage points). Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 1.8 percentage points to 29.1% of mobile subscribers. Game-playing was done by 26.9% of the mobile audience (up 1.2 percentage points), while 19.0% listened to music on their phones (up 1.1 percentage points).
