Two unidentified men shot dead a Rwandan journalist outside his home in the capital Kigali last Thursday (24 June 2010). Jean Leonard Rugambage was the acting editor of the Umuvugizi newspaper, which had been recently suspended by authorities.
The chief editor of the paper Jean Bosco Gasasira, who fled to Uganda in April, told news agency Voice of America that he was "100 percent sure" the government was behind the murder. Gasasira said Rugambage was killed over an article published online in which he linked Rwandan security services to the attempted killing of an outspoken general in exile in South Africa last weekend.
Rights watchdog Human Rights Watch condemned Rugambage's murder and the recent arrests of several opposition members as attempts to suppress dissent ahead of presidential elections in August.
