Vineyard Hotel presents Hotel Plays by Tennessee WilliamsCape Town theatre lovers are in for a unique experience. Fresh from successful, sold-out performances in New York, London, New Orleans, Provincetown and St. Louis, the phenomenon that is Tennessee Williams' The Hotel Plays is coming to the Vineyard Hotel this winter. Author of classic plays The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tennessee Williams lived most of his life in hotels. From the 1930s until his death, in 1983, Williams wrote a series of short plays set in hotel rooms. For the past seven years' selections of these plays have been performed in actual hotel rooms under the collective title The Hotel Plays. Audiences across the USA and in London have experienced some of Williams' best writing, up-close and personal, in an exclusive, fully immersive, site-specific environment. The Vineyard's Hotel Plays production will include a sumptuous three course, wine-paired dinner. Between courses, patrons will view Williams's one-acts in two separate suites in the hotel's historic wing. The luxurious Vineyard Hotel is set in a seven-acre riverside garden estate on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Built in 1799 as a country cottage for Lady Anne Barnard and converted to a hotel in the 1890s, the Vineyard has over its illustrious history welcomed numerous artists, writers, celebrities and Nobel laureates and is the perfect setting for this unique theatrical experience. Acclaimed both at home and in the USA for their landmark productions, Abrahamse & Meyer Productions have garnered numerous local and international awards and nominations for their innovative stagings of Williams classics like the Kingdom of Earth, The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore, One Arm, Stairs to the Roof and The Day on Which A Man Dies. The Hotel Plays will première at the Vineyard Hotel, Colinton Road, Newlands on 30 July at 19.00 and have additional performances at 19.00 on 4, 5, 13, 19 and 20 August.
