Key purpose of role

The Commercial Manager is responsible for leading all commercial activity on the station, ensuring revenue growth through effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Reporting to the Station Manager and working at peer level with the Programming Manager, this role plays a critical part in developing and executing the station’s commercial strategy. The Commercial Manager serves as the key liaison between the station and the Sales and Creative Solutions teams, ensuring that all commercial content aligns with the station's brand and audience strategy. The role contributes to the broader station strategy, drives integrated campaign solutions, and ensures flawless implementation of revenue-generating initiatives across on-air and digital platforms.

Key performance areas

Commercial Enablement and Creative Solutions Development:

• Facilitate collaboration between CapeTalk Programming and Sales teams.
• Co-develop creative concepts that align with the CapeTalk brand.
• Attend internal and external client briefings, present tailored commercial proposals.
• Brief presenters and producers on campaign objectives and delivery.
• Respond to all CS-related queries regarding CapeTalk properties.
• Identify new revenue opportunities and develop sellable brand/presenter-led concepts.
• Support sales and CS in achieving annual station revenue targets.
• Ensure seamless execution of sold campaigns by the programming team.
• Align commercial campaigns with programming standards while meeting client needs.
• Liaise with the Ops Co-ordinator on rosters, campaign execution, and reporting.
• Provide regular feedback to presenters, producers, and technical teams.
• Collaborate with Trade Marketing for client interactions.

Audience Growth Support:
  • Ensure delivery of quality, engaging content for the target audience.
  • Support the implementation of CapeTalk’s content strategy.
  • Regularly listen to the station to assess content quality and audience alignment.

Digital Integration:
  • Ensure commercial digital campaigns are effectively executed.
  • Guide programming teams in using PMB’s platforms to strengthen campaign impact and client engagement.

Production Liaison:
  • Serve as the point of contact between programming and production for commercial requirements.
  • Script CS promos and other promotional material.
  • Oversee smooth rollout of sponsorships and promotions on CapeTalk.

Strategy Contribution:

  • Participate in CapeTalk strategic planning sessions.
  • Ensure CS strategy aligns and complements CapeTalk’s broader goals.
  • Contribute creative and commercial insights to long-term station planning.


Minimum required qualification:

• NQF level 6 in media studies, marketing or related field

Minimum years of experience:

• Minimum 8-10 years’ experience in the media industry, majority of which is in commercial radio environment

Additional role requirements:

• Willingness to travel as required
• Sound knowledge of the South African radio market and broader media landscape
• Good understanding of economic trends and their impact on the commercial environment
• Basic understanding of studio operations and technical workflows
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and lead diverse teams
• Proven ability to drive innovation and commercial creativity
• Ability to collaborate effectively with on-air talent, producers, and cross-functional teams
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Skilled at facilitating both two-way and group communication
• Ability to thrive in a demanding environment requiring both creative and analytical thinking
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to set, manage, and meet deadlines
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
• High emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities
• Confident presentation skills and the ability to articulate ideas clearly
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-pressure, results-driven environment
• Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to foster productive working relationships internally and externally
