Claim after bypass patient contracts HIV

A KwaZulu-Natal Midlands man is claiming more than R27 million from a Durban hospital and the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) alleging that he contracted HIV during a blood transfusion after a heart by-pass operation in 2003.

In papers filed in the Pietermaritzburg High Court the man (who cannot be named) said he had undergone a heart bypass at the St Augustine's Hospital on September 20, 2003 and had received a blood transfusion.

The matter is due to go on trial from March 15.
