Law@work, UCT Faculty of Law, is pleased to present a series of one-day seminars on the Protection of Personal Information Act, which has been signed into law.
About the seminar:
The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) has made it necessary for all companies to reconsider how they treat the personal information of customers, staff and suppliers. This can be a daunting task, because POPI creates new rules for every aspect of the 'information lifecycle' - from collecting it to destroying it.
POPI is not even in force yet,* so why should you care? Data breaches are virtually a daily occurrence now. They can cause significant damage to a business' reputation, not to mention the loss of profit that occurs when customers stop trusting a business with their information.
What makes this workshop different to all the others out there? We will not just regurgitate the provisions of POPI. We will tell you how to get started with your POPI project, how to justify your project on the basis of increased efficiency and security and share the lessons we have learnt so far.
*POPI has been signed into law, but the effective date has not been announced. Parliament is currently appointing an Information Regulator. We estimate that the effective date will be announced this year.
Join us for a one-day seminar on how to get started with your POPI compliance project!
Who should attend?
The course is primarily aimed at information officers, in-house legal advisors, compliance officers and attorneys but it is also very useful to people with no legal background.
You can expect to:
- gain practical knowledge on the duties POPI will create for your business;
- get an overview of the legal documents you need to create;
- get advice on how to get started with your business' POPI compliance project;
- learn about the lessons we have learnt from the projects we have been involved in.
Course presenters
Paul Esselaar and Elizabeth de Stadler are the founding directors of Novation Consulting. They are the authors of A Guide to the Protection of Personal Information Act (Juta 2015) and have acted as legal advisors on POPI compliance projects. They believe in doing compliance which also makes business sense. Novation specialises in improving regulatory compliance, designing innovative and effective ways to communicate 'legal' documents to consumers and developing effective (and fun) training.
