3 December Somerset West Networking Event

Topic: In pursuit of failure

My daughter and I used to take piano lessons together. When someone came around to our house, my daughter would want to show off her new skills and would happily plink out her sounds on the piano, concentrating hard, creating a just barely recognizable tune, and then she would look at her audience for acknowledgement. I, on the other hand, did not even mention that I was taking lessons and never volunteered to show anyone my progress. In fact, I only practiced at home when I was the only one there.

We are taught from young, to avoid failure. We learn that incompetence is our enemy and that success means perfection. But what if we have been getting this wrong? What if the covering up of failures is a way bigger problem than just not getting something right the first time? What if our pursuit of success means that we have missed the joy of the journey of discovery? What if we miss the best business opportunity or career move because we are afraid that we are not ready? What if we are holding our businesses back, because we are waiting until we are good enough to play in front of an audience?

I believe, that to squeeze the best juice out of life, that we should pursue failure. We should build a resilience for failure that makes us bolder and better and more successful. As we end this year and look to 2016, we will discover how to be bolder, more resilient, less judgmental, more creative and ultimately more successful.
