Alternative Banking Conference 2015

The Alternative Banking Conference aims to redefine the meaning of financial inclusion from merely banking the unbanked to a definition that now refers to "the convergence of various bank and non-bank players to provide financial services at lower cost, wider reach and greater convenience to all end consumers of financial services, unbanked or otherwise" (Finacle: Thought Paper 2012).

The three themes covered will address the growing use of branchless banking channels in emerging markets. Discussions on the first day will address key topics such as whether these alternative channels for financial services beyond payments will be embraced by these emerging segments, and layout what role governments and the private sector have to play to affect uptake and usage in emerging markets; with a particular focus on Sub-Saharan Africa.

The second day of the event will focus discussions on mobile money and agency banking as strategic investments for banks and non-banks. Through relevant technology and collaboration; financial service providers have an opportunity to gain entry into a largely untapped market by partnering with banks for a mutually beneficial arrangement.
