Moving into Dance Mophatong

Moving into Dance Mophatong annual season - Of Hounds & Men

The legendary dance company, Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM), is launching its long-awaited annual season, titled, 'Of Hounds & Men'.

The season showcases four pieces of riveting dance over three days. It boasts the artistic flair of award-winning local and international choreographers with the prowess of beautiful movement expressed by leading company dancers.

The four pieces are 'Bolero', 'fight, flight, feathers, f***ers', 'Road', and 'For Now'.
The ensemble of dance brings to the stage fresh interpretations of old stories and is a platform for some of the company's choreographers to showcase their growth.

Bolero - the much loved and famous dance piece, created in 1978 by Alfred Hinkel, which focused on the Immorality Act - has been recreated and reinterpreted by Hinkel and the dancers from Moving into Dance.

'Fight, flight, feathers, f***ers', a collaboration between British-born choreographer Rachel Erdos and Moving into Dance company member and choreographer Sunnyboy Mandla Motau, explores the politics and physicality of masculinity.

Road, choreographed by Oscar Buthelezi, analyses the dilemmas of the path as both the place where we want to be and the route that guides us there.

For Now is a new work choreographed by the MID second year trainees, under mentorship. It is a concept piece that grapples with the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and how to get to the point of completion.

Then, in a treat sneak preview, ahead of what promises to be a sell-out world premier Germany tour, is the staging of an excerpt from R & J: Rebellion & Johannesburg. The production is Jessica Nupen's bold and provocative re-telling of the classical Shakespearean story, Romeo and Juliet, set to the backdrop of a transforming street subculture in Johannesburg.
