On 6 August 2015, the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSA) will be hosting a dialogue on diversity in human sexuality. This dialogue, which is open to interested stakeholders and the general public, is based on the recently published report on Diversity in Human Sexuality: Implications for Policy in Africa.
The report, which was compiled by experts in the field of sociology, embryology, psychology, genetics, philosophy, medicine, anthropology, bioethics, law, public health, cultural literature and epidemiology, is an evidence-based scientific report with the main purpose of disseminating information and providing science advice to governments and other key stakeholders.
ASSAf, which compiled the report in collaboration with the Uganda National Academy of Sciences, followed the traditional Academy consensus study methodology in which the experts, who were guided by a panel chair, undertook the study on a voluntary basis, making this a multi-perspective approach which is free of partisan interest.
The purpose of this dialogue is for the audience to engage with the study panellists in order to fully unpack and understand the findings of the report, as well as discuss the implications of legislation criminalising homosexuality within Africa.
