Toyota Kata

Toyota Kata, the book by Mike Rother published in 2010, has had a great impact on lean practitioners and the way they work. This is definitely also true of us at the Lean Institute Africa. In 2015 we introduce a one-day course to share insights that challenge practice of the two katas: problem-solving and coaching. It is aimed at deepening thoughtful daily practice in those already entrenched in the lean way.

Target audience
This one-day workshop is specifically designed for:
• People with experience with the lean management approach
• Anyone seeking to coach front-line teams in a daily improvement process
• Individuals and teams that that have recently commenced a lean initiative and seek to entrench it
• Experienced practitioners wishing to broaden their skill set

Purpose
• To grasp the power of the kata concepts and process
• To practice the skill
• To entrench thoughtful, evidence-based management and continuous improvement

Process
We will follow a process of presentations, discussion (including case examples) and practice to:
• Develop fuller understanding of the improvement kata and coaching kata
• Develop skills in the daily coaching practice
• Understand how to deploy the kata approach

Benefits
At the end of the workshop participants will have an understanding of the improvement kata and coaching kata approach and some practice in coaching. There will also be clarity on how to roll this out in your own organisation as a crucial part of sustaining your lean transformation journey through the development of a robust daily management system.

Workshop structure
The workshop is based on the material of Mike Rother and benefits from personal training of the facilitator (Norman Faull) by Mike Rother himself.

Workshop facilitator
Professor Norman Faull, Chairman of the Lean Institute Africa and Emeritus Professor at the Graduate School of Business, UCT. Read more about Prof Faull on our website: http://www.lean.org.za/lean-institute-africa-about-us/
