Forging Enterprise and INSME

We invite all who have an interest in small business promotion in our country to be part of this exciting programme of reflection, celebration and charting the future together. We extend a special invitation to colleagues from around the world to come to South Africa and share experiences, lessons and insights from their own small business promotion efforts.

The year 1995 marked a major turning point in small business promotion in South Africa. On 28 March 1995 the South African Parliament gazetted the new government's watershed policy on small business development, the White Paper on national strategy for the development and promotion of small business in South Africa. It was the first time that South Africa had such comprehensive policy on small business promotion. That same day then president Nelson Mandela opened his first President's Conference on small business in Durban, officially launching the country's small business policy. It was a moment of great anticipation and the nation was mobilised behind the new vision and strategy. Friends from around the world joined their South African counterparts to deliberate and share insights on the new strategy and its implementation. Some 2,000 people attended this landmark event. Much has been accomplished since then, with several institutions and programmes now in operation in all three spheres of government and within the private sector. Twenty years on, it is time to look back and reflect, to celebrate what has been achieved, and to chart the way to the future. To mark twenty years from the events of March 1995, a major national event is being organised. Forging Enterprise 2015 comprises four components:

- A national programme of celebratory events taking place in all provinces, bringing together the small business development community
- A national small business conference reminiscent of the 1995 President's Conference on small business, together with an expo
- The International Network for Small and Medium Enterprises' (INSME) 11th Annual Meeting and Forum
- 20th Anniversary Awards recognising those that have made a significant contribution to small business promotion in the country before and after 1995.
