Overview of Infrastructure Africa 2014

Good infrastructure is the catalyst for any development with regards to cities, countries and continents. Billions are spent every year on the development and implementation of sustainable infrastructure projects across Africa.

The strong level of economic growth achieved in Africa in recent years has led to an expansion of industry, commerce and per capita income. This in turn has fueled demand for infrastructure services including energy, transportation, ICT, urban infrastructure development and cross border infrastructure projects.
However, to build the infrastructure it needs to support growth and meet development goals, Africa will have to spend about $93 billion a year for a decade. Two-thirds of that sum would be for investments; the remaining third for maintenance. Africa already spends $45 billion a year on infrastructure, two-thirds of which is domestically financed from taxes and user charges. Most financing for capital investment is obtained from external sources according to the African Development Bank Group.

Maintaining present levels of expenditure on infrastructure and eliminating operational inefficiencies will not be enough to provide all of the funding needed to meet Africa's infrastructure needs.

How much more will be required to close Africa's infrastructure funding gap?

Partnerships in Africa will pave the way for financing infrastructure growth and this annual conference will bring together Africa's most senior business leaders, policy makers, regulators, financiers and developers to advance, debate and champion the delivery of Africa's critical infrastructure requirements, while providing expert advice on the current state of infrastructure and the anticipated impact of future development.

The 4th Infrastructure Africa event comprises of a two-day high-level conference and company showcase. Side events will include a Ministerial Roundtable and Gauteng Infrastructure Project workshop.
