Muslim marriage contractsThe Professional Development Project of the Faculty of Law, UCT, is pleased to present a two-day course on Muslim marriage contracts on 26 and 27 August 2015. About the course This two-day course will unpack the legal implications of the Muslim marriage contract by considering: a) The historical context relating to the non-recognition of Muslim marriages in South Africa Historically, in South Africa, Muslim marriages have never been legally recognised. However, during post-apartheid South Africa, the judiciary has recognised the Muslim marriage as a contract, and proven terms and customs emanating from that contract as legally enforceable. Who will benefit from this course? Course presenter The course will be hosted by Associate Professor Waheeda Amien, who is an internationally recognised expert in the field of Muslim Personal Law and Human Rights. Prof. Amien is an admitted attorney of the High Court and practised family law before joining the legal academy. She is furthermore accredited as a mediator by the Family Mediator's Association of the Cape (FAMAC) and is a member of the Executive Body of the International Commission on Legal Pluralism.
