UN names the 2016 Champions of the EarthThe United Nations awarded six global environmental leaders with the Champions of the Earth award at a global biological diversity conference which was held in Cancún, Mexico. The award acknowledges figures from the public and private sectors as well as those from civil society who have had a significant and positive impact on the environment. The president of Rwanda, an Australian eco-innovator, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy, an Indian organiser of world's largest beach clean-up, Honduran indigenous activist Berta Cáceres, and veteran Mexican biologist were all praised for their efforts in bringing attention to the issues facing the environment.
