2014 Field Band Foundation National Championships

On Saturday 11 October 2014, the sounds of brass, percussion, marimbas and steel drums, combined with the flash of flags and colourful costumes will reverberate through the Wanderers Stadium in Corlett Drive, Illovo, Johannesburg, when the Field Band Foundation (FBF) holds its' annual national championships. Six of the top field bands from around South Africa will battle for individual and team prizes before local and international judges - the culmination of many months of rehearsal and, in some cases, years, of preparation.

The primary event will be opened at 9am by Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture Ms. Rejoice Thizwilondi Mabudafhasi and by well-known entrepreneur and FBF Chairman, Herman Mashaba.

The Field Band Foundation was established in 1996 to use the global performance band concept to bring to disadvantaged young people the advantages of competitiveness, teamwork, discipline and timekeeping, among other lifeskills.

The six field bands competing in the Premier division include:

De Beers Blouberg Field Band

Black Like Me Soweto Field Band

De Beers PPC Kimberley Field Band

Black Like Me - Real People Mdantsane Field Band

PFG Londulusha Field Band (Springs)

Investec Alexandra Field Band.

The FBF currently has more than 5,000 members in 48 bands across South Africa and receives significant corporate support. State support comes through the Department of Arts and Culture, and international support primarily through partners in Norway, Flanders, and the US.

The 2014 Field Band Foundation National Championships is set to be a morning of superb family entertainment with live instrumental music that will stir your soul.

Members of the public are invited to attend with their friends and families at no cost.
