Brief description
This course emphasises practice of Arts and Play
therapy. Instead of only focusing on knowledge, this well established
intensive programme has been designed to develop
and deepen your arts and play therapy skills and insight as well,
and equips you with the tools and techniques necessary to
succeed in using the arts and play in your current approach to
therapy. The course equips the professionals and those working
with traumatised children to better understand and communicate
with a child on the child's own development level during
intervention. Arts and play techniques are introduced as a means
of improved assessment and treatment of the traumatised child.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, candidates should have
knowledge of:
the historical development of creative arts therapies and
child development;
different arts and play activities in working with traumatized
children.
use internationally accepted terms related to arts and play
therapy correctly;
initiate projects, identify stakeholders and develop scope
statements for projects in their work environment;
manage scope changes;
apply the tools and techniques learnt in their work and
therapeutic environment
Course structure
Classes are held Monday to Friday from 8am - 5pm for the
duration of the course.

Social workers, teachers, psychologists, psychiatrists, registered
psychological counselors, psychometrists, pastors, youth and care
workers as well as anyone wishing to understand the value of play
and the arts in child and adult development and functioning
Course content
Day 1: Arts and play therapy: an advanced integration
A reflection on the integration of creative arts and play therapy.
Decentralization explained. Experiential workshop.
Day 2: Person, approach and skills of the therapist
Who is the arts and play therapist? A consideration of
inter-relatedness of attributes, personality and skill?
Day 3: Principles and practice of arts and play therapy
An experiential workshop. Application of principles and practices.
Tools of the trade!
Day 4: Parent/child/therapist triad
The triadic relationship explored.
Day 5: Adults in arts and play therapy?
This course takes a step away from a child only approach to play
therapy with the traumatised child. Developmental stages, family
systems and appropriate play and arts are explored.
