The psychology of football: Love, hope & violence

The new SAPC Media Group are pleased to announce that as the FIFA 2014 World Cup, (with all its dramas, glories and heartbreak) fades into memory, Sue Levy will present her paper, The Psychology of Football: Love, Hope and Violence in the Game of Life

This paper uses Football to show how unconscious conflicts around intimacy, dependence and separation play out through passionate allegiances to a team. The paper focuses on how loss and in particular, traumatic loss, can be contained and represented symbolically through "The Beautiful Game". The paper examines themes of love, hope and violence in both player and fan populations and uses clinical material from a traumatised football team to highlight these themes.
Sue Levy is an IPA registered Training Psychoanalyst and a Clinical Psychologist with a specialist interest in Trauma. Until recently she was an external Lecturer in the Trauma Seminar Series at the Tavistock Clinic in London. She has published a book together with Alessandra Lemma on Trauma titled: The Perversion of Loss: Psychoanalytical Reflections on Trauma.
She has a passionate interest in Football.
