President Jacob Zuma signed the Protection of Personal Information Act ("POPI") into law on 27 November 2013. The intention of the Act is to bring South Africa in-line with international standards of protection of personal information and will change the way in which both government and businesses deal with an individual's private information. Non-compliance with the Act's regulations could result in heavy fines for businesses. Simply put, the Act sets conditions for what companies can do with their client information.
