Gourmets & Gourmands 2014

Drinking wine Democratic at 6th Annual Gourmets & Gourmands

In accordance with the Emperor's decree the 6th annual Gourmets and Gourmands supported by Hartmans on behalf of Carpe Diem School will take place at Carpe Diem School on 23 August 2014. In his decree the Emperor announced that as long as he is the guardian of the Carpe Diem School, nothing shall banish peace and festivity! Amid the gifts of merry Bacchus, together with our wives and friends, with accompaniment of Lydian flutes, we will join the festivities until day break. And 'merry Bacchus' can only mean one thing...the best wines South Africa has to offer!

The ancient Romans believed that wine was a daily necessity which made the drink 'democratic' and ubiquitous. Wine was available to everyone including slaves, peasants and women. To ensure the steady supply of wine to Roman soldiers and colonists, viticulture and wine production spread to every part of the empire. Done in true grandiose Roman style, and always to please the Emperor, wines of various regions of the Western Cape will be carefully paired with each of the 5 courses served to the guests during this magnificent feast. Wines of Baleia Bay, Boschkloof, Diemersfontein, Durbanville Hills, Delaairre Graff; De Wetshof, Goede Hoop, Graham Beck, Hartenberg, Hermanuspietersfontein, Herold, Hillcock Wines, Jakkalsvlei, Jordan, Karusa, Krans, L'Arvenir, Sevenwacht, Spier, Steenberg Vineyards, Strandveld, The Goose, Waterford and Van Loveren are on the list of wines to be enjoyed.

This year some elegant wines from the Eden district will be served by some of the participating restaurants. An exciting newcomer is Baleia Bay. The farm Dassieklip is home to the Baleia Bay vineyards and was specifically selected for the vineyards because of its limestone rich soil and close proximity to the ocean. The name Baleia Bay was inspired by the Portuguese word for whale (Baleia) and it is directly related to the farm being a stone's throw away from St Sebastian Bay which is known as the whale nursery of South Africa due to the record number of Southern Right whales that migrate here annually.
Karusa wines, from as close by as Oudtshoorn, will be served by Simola's Chef Delia. Karusa Vineyard is nestled in the tranquil village of Schoemanshoek, en-route to the Cango Caves from the Oudtshoorn. Well-known for its Cap Classique and Mediterranean-styled wines, Karusa is a family-operated and managed Southern Cape Premium Wine producer and Craft Brewery. Professional golfer Retief Goosen's The Goose Wines is the third wine from our Eden district and will be paired with Su Casa's dishes. The Goose wine range is truly unique as it is handcrafted in high altitude vineyards on the northern slopes of the Outeniqua Mountains, in the heart of the Garden Route.

The 6th annual Gourmets & Gourmands will be anything but tragic. It will be a feast talked about for years to come...
