In 2009 we got exposed to an idea that was being developed by Danai, the idea was based on her research and trip to Liberia, a war torn country, the play interestingly would focus on the role of the women during the war. This became particularly important to us as artists based in a country with our history, that while we never had a civil war we still have a history where women's role isn't always appreciated and any of their contribution is second best to even average of male stories. Eclipsed, is a human story that we simply have to tell, for Liberia, for Africa.
In a month that see's the Soweto Theatre break new ground in the history of theatre in South Africa with a one day only performance by legendary Jazz Singer, composer and all round talented songstress Sibongile Khumalo (August 10th) the Soweto Theatre presents, Danai Gurira's (Obie Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for writing), internationally famed "Eclipsed"
Originally produced by the Macarter Theatre in the United States "Eclipsed" makes its full debut at the Soweto Theatre following its brief run at the Windybrow Centre for the Performance in 2010.
Set in the volatile era towards the end of the war in Liberia, Warona Seane (Naledi Award Nominee, best Director) directs Danai Gurira's wartime play. Based on the experiences of the women of the war and how they survived this horrible period in the history of Liberia Eclipsed takes us on a theatrical journey like no other African play has taken us.
"Eclipsed'"deals, primarily, with relationships among women who are facing the same plight under violent conditions and how their destinies are consequently affected. How young women are molded by war, which tends to use them as sexual casualties. "Eclipsed" tells the story of the African women in War like no other play has.
