A comprehensive data analysis course

A comprehensive data analysis course: Using stata and statistics

Monday 14 - friday 18 July in Johannesburg, South Africa

About this course: Stata is arguably the best software for data management and statistical analysis. It is a fast, powerful statistical package designed for researchers of all disciplines. Stata is a complete, integrated statistical package that provides everything for data analysis from data management to basic analysis and advanced analysis. Stata makes it easy to conduct data cleaning and management, distinctly styled graphs, descriptive analysis and
advanced analysis.

Course contents:The course objectives include introducing participants to Stata and Stata files including do-files (which allows for quality control, quick reproducibility of analysis) and log-files (which stores data management and analysis outputs). They will learn to use Stata for data cleaning, management and statistical analysis. The theory behind the statistics will be explained and participants will be able to interpret statistical outputs.
After the course, participants will be able to take raw data collected in their settings, clean them, summarise them, analyse them and take appropriate action. They will also achieve the understanding of descriptive statistics, statistics, bi-variate inferential statistics and
multiple regression. They will also be able to critically analyse research reports. The course will teach participants the following:
- Study designs and data collection methods
- From variables to datasets
- A cool introduction to Stata
- Explore the capabilities of Stata
- Learn to use Stata: windows, commands, do-files, log files.
- Introduction to descriptive statistics
- Basic and intermediate data analysis in Stata
- Making sense of data: more descriptive statistics
- Subgroup analysis
- Plotting and manipulating Stata graphs
- Data cleaning and management
- Import data in different formats
- Appending, merging data from different sources
- Hypothesis testing, p-value and confidence intervals
- Parametric and non-parametric tests
- Chi-squared, t-test, Wilcoxin test, correlation, and Anova
- Concepts in multiple regression: understanding and
interpreting outputs
- Adjusting for confounding and calculating adjusted measures
- Un-adjusted and adjusted odds ratios
- Logistic regression using Stata
- Linear regression using Stata
