Lovers of classical music will delight in the fact that Carmina Burana will be performed at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on Friday March 21, Human Rights day, as a fundraiser for the May 2014 exhibit to the Chelsea Flower Show. The event has been sponsored by the SA Gold Coin Exchange (SAGCE) and The Scoin Shop, a major sponsor of the SA - Kirstenbosch Chelsea Exhibitfor the past three years.
One of the most popular works on the concert stage Carmina Burana is a scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff in 1935 and 1936, based on 24 poems from the medieval collection Carmina Burana. An epic masterpiece, capturing the imagination of music lovers worldwide, the garden setting is perfect for this performance by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of award winning conductor Alex Fokkens.
The soaring voices of the Cape Town Symphony Choir and soloists add to the magic of these familiar pieces starting with the hugely popular 'O Fortuna'.
Says Executive Chairman of the SAGCE, Alan Demby: "Our medallions showcase South Africa's floral heritage in an unusual form - gold. We are simply delighted to be involved in yet another project that mirrors the inspiration of our medallions."
Since the concert takes place on a public holiday this is the time to pack a picnic, gather family and friends and head off to the most beautiful garden in Africa to enjoy an afternoon of musical splendour in this most magnificent setting. And, in spirit of celebrating our floral heritage, there will also be a chance to win a gold medallion, courtesy of The South African Gold Coin Exchange and The Scoin Shop.
The concert takes place at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (Rhodes Avenue, Newlands, Cape Town from 17:30 until 19:00. Gates open at 16:00.
