The drama of writing a play

Award-winning playwright Louis Viljoen, who wrote Champ, will be taking aspiring storytellers through the write paces with The Drama Of Writing A Play workshop.

What makes this workshop exceptional is that it allows writers to step outside the box and take on the role of director, or even actor, in turning words into action and receiving direct feedback.

This unique workshop for aspirant dramatists is ideal for storytellers with a vivid imagination who would like to explore the magic of live theatre and the transformational impact it has on society and community.

Writers will examine the raw material of drama, the art of the drama, what it takes to be a dramatist in South Africa, and how to get your plays on to the stage and festival circuit.

During the workshop the dramatists will look at how to plot the action, explore the theme of the drama, and develop characters and how to write dialogue.

The Drama of Writing a Play looks at the relationship between the dramatist and actors, as well as working with directors and producers to turn words into action.

On 13 April a scene from the plays will be performed and evaluated. This session will be open to the public who can come on see a snippet of a new play in action.

The workshop is ideal for writers (and actors) who want to make a difference in the local theatre scene, and cultivate the growth of new South African plays.

The workshop is hosted by The Writing Studio and presented by Louis Viljoen, who has worked as a writer, director, actor and producer in theatre, film and television for eleven years.
