Cape Argus Pick n Pay Momentum Cycle TourOn the second Sunday in March every year, 35,000 cyclists line up to participate in the world's largest timed cycling event, the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. From humble beginnings, the event has grown beyond the imagination of those early cycling pioneers who pedalled the Cape Peninsula in 1978 in protest of better cycling infrastructure, to becoming the iconic international event it is today, a permanent fixture on the calendars of professional and recreational cyclists worldwide. Now enjoying its 37th year, the Cycle Tour is no longer a race, but a pilgrimage undertaken by South African and foreign visitors with an interest in the outdoors and leading a healthy lifestyle. In addition to ensuring the success of the event, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, organisers of the event, places a strong focus on charity. The tour has generated millions of rands for cycling development and social upliftment projects supported by its two key beneficiaries, the Pedal Power Association and the Rotary Club of Claremont, as well as various other Rotary Clubs that are involved in the staging of the event. A key departure point from 2012 is the allocation of entries specifically for charitable groups to use the event as a platform to give back to their communities.
