Media ethics

No one likes to think of themselves as unethical, but without an understanding of the various considerations involved, journalists can unknowingly cause harm and result in press council complaints.

This course covers in one day:
• Why ethics?
• The four pillars of ethics: truth telling, independence, minimising harm and accountability;
• The new provisions of the Press Code and lessons to learn from recent rulings;
• Ethical decision making in practice;
• Dealing with sources, from anonymous to vulnerable;
• Making amends when you get it wrong.

About your expert facilitator:
Franz Kruger is the ombud for the Mail & Guardian, and a member of the South African Press Appeals Panel, having been an acknowledged expert in ethics for a number of years. Adjunct Professor and Director of the Wits Radio Academy at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Franz has his masters in Journalism from City University, London. Franz has been journalist, sub-editor and editor in his journalism career and is a very experienced media trainer.

Who should attend:
This course is for any journalist, news editor, editor or sub-editor who needs to get to grips with media law to protect their company against expensive lawsuits.
