Learning the art of community building

"Imagine if we can be a country where we are able to move away from a focus on individual achievement and truly live our Ubuntu heritage!" - Dr Louise van Rhyn

The Learning the Art of Community Building workshops aim to strengthen the fabric of South African society by igniting active citizenship. It also aims to bring a cross-section of the population together in one room to have conversations and build connections that contribute to the "Walking Together" future put forward by the Dinokeng Scenarios.

These sessions have been successfully facilitated across South Africa since 2009. The workshop is built on the methodology of Peter Block, a global authority on community building and author of the books Community: The Structure of Belonging and Abundant Community.

In his book Community: A Structure of Belonging, Peter Block says, "Most sustainable improvements in community occur when citizens discover their own power to act ... when they stop waiting for the professionals or elected leadership to do something, and decide they can reclaim what they have delegated to others."

Learning the Art of Community Building workshops create an environment where trust can be established, creative thinking can blossom, and all voices can be heard, thereby deepening conversations about an alternative future for all in this country. Symphonia for South Africa has seen how this methodology can make a particular impact towards improvements in the education sector in the country.
