Elections Reporting

The 2014 elections will mark the 20th year of our democracy and elections stories will be everywhere, but few will capture reader's imaginations.

Make sure your elections stories stay ahead of the curb, by learning to:
• Understand the electoral system in South Africa;
• The background of the main political parties (and some small, but significant ones);
• Develop a personal reporting strategy for the elections;
• Understand news media's role during elections;
• Contextualise service delivery protests and electoral democracy;
• Use geo-mapping technology and tools for great elections coverage;
• Plan for diary events;
1. Pre-election
2. Polling day
3. Follow up
• Get news from all parts of the country;
• Find the elections stories that really speak to readers;
• Use social media to find and share elections stories;
• See beyond the politics of the elections; and,
• Ethics and the elections.

After this course, participants will be equipped with a clear strategy of how they will cover the elections.

Who should attend: This workshop is designed for mainstream and beat journalists and is a core (basic) level course.
