Come and witness the evolution of SA Jazz as two poignantly engaging bands take to the King Kong stage on Saturday, 19 October. Men of experience, GP Riot, meet the uncommonly astute young Malcolm Jiyane TreeO for a riotous night of free jazz and experimentation. Two bands, two sets each, one night of provocative live music.
The Malcolm Jiyane TreeO will open the night. Shifting between the piano and the trombone Malcolm will prove why he is one of the most important young South African jazz artists to watch. This complete and consummate artist displays musical wisdom beyond his years. Accompanied by the talented Senzo Nxumalo on bass and the fierce Kgori Makgatle on drums, the Malcolm Jiyane Trio will surprise you, move you and leave you a life-long fan.
GP Riot will then take centre stage. The trio is made up of Pule Pheto (Piano) Gibo Pheto (Bass) and Thebe Libere (percussion). The band was born on the revolutionary streets of Soweto and cultivated during decades of exile in Europe. Now almost thirty years later, the Pheto brothers and celebrated percussionist Thebe Lipere have reunited to form GP Riot. In a South Africa that is still challenged by the tension between its history and its future, GP Riot's music continues to echo the spirit of revolution in a refreshing and arresting take on African Avant Garde.
