This interactive three-day course is designed to inspire you, to enlighten you, to challenge you, and to help take your craft as a subeditor to the next level.
We'll show you how to:

• Assess articles for tone, style, content, brief, fairness, impartiality, ethics and legality;
• Pull several stories into one cohesive article;
• Write better headlines and more appetising blurbs and listings;
• Check for accuracy, as well as ethical and legal consistency;
• Entice readers with stylish page furniture;
• Adapt subbing rules to visual elements;
• Write captivating headings, subheadings, intros and captions;
• Detect overt and subtle bias;
• Maintain the journalist's voice; and,
• Ensure that articles are as ethical as possible and protect your publication.

Not only will you learn how to, but you will get to practice with interesting and enjoyable subbing exercises, constructive critique sessions and case studies of great newspaper and magazine editing.
About the expert trainer:
Gavin Stewart was formerly Editor of the Daily Dispatch in East London and Professor and Head of Journalism at Rhodes University. He has extensive experience of subediting and editing at various newspapers, including the Rand Daily Mail, the Natal Witness, Drum Publications, the Northern Reporter and Sunday Times. He is a founder member of the South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) and serves on Sanef Council.
