UPSO and All That JazzThe University of Pretoria Department of Music is fast becoming one of the leading proponents of jazz in South Africa. It is only befitting that the University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra follows suit with their new concert titled ...and all that jazz! The University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra has put together a programme to showcase the most thrilling jazz orchestral music, and invited none other than the Piano Man himself - Charl du Plessis - to join in the jazzy celebrations. It is only befitting that the University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra follows suit with their new concert titled ...and all that jazz! The University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra has put together a programme to showcase the most thrilling jazz orchestral music, and invited none other than the Piano Man himself - Charl du Plessis - to join in the jazzy celebrations. Jazz piano legend, Du Plessis, will open the concert with George Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F. This is one of the few works where a collision of western and jazz styles creates a truly euphoric combination, a masterwork that could rival any 19th century composer's concerto, but with that added jazz 'zing'. In Du Plessis' debut performance of the Gershwin composition he will be inaugurating a brand-new Steinway concert grand piano that he specially picked out for the University of Pretoria at the Hamburg Steinway Factory. Darius Milhaud's Le boeuf sur le toit follows hot on Gershwin's heels. This is the music from the ballet of the same title and promises to add a spicy Latin American flavour to the programme. Le boeuf sur le toit is a collection of Brazilian rhythms, including a sultry tango that promises to thrill audiences. Expect a steamy view of 1920s Paris - the height of bohemian burlesque cabaret. The last item on the night's line-up is Dmitri Shostakovich's Jazz Suite Number 2, which may be interpreted as a tongue-in-cheek commentary of American jazz through the aural perception of a Soviet socialist. The piece creates its own unique orchestral sound using a variety of instruments and Shostakovich's masterful orchestral administrations, rearranged specially for the University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra by Eddie Clayton.
