Umculo is an international organisation dedicated to social change through music theatre in South Africa. Founded in 2010, Umculo (which means both "music" and "reconciliation") takes as its starting-point the wealth of talent and passion for opera in South Africa's diverse communities. Catherine Milliken, who directed the Berlin Philharmonic's cutting-edge education programme for seven years from 2005, joins theatre-maker Ntando Cele, whose career has taken her from Durban to Amsterdam and Bern; Marion Haak, who spent four years in Ramallah building up children's choirs for the Barenboim-Said Foundation, and Lea Heinrich, head of education for the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin.
