In a nutshell: The South African court and legal system can be a labyrinth for the new reporter. This one-day course serves as a basic introduction to the laws, rules and regulations that affects journalists in their daily writing. The focus is on the laws put in place by Parliament and how these laws are being implemented by the executive and the judicial system. Journalists are shown how the courts fit into the South African democracy, they are given the tools to find and understand the laws that are in place and they are shown how an act is passed from start to finish.
Course Outcomes: By the end of the course, trainees will be able to: *Understand how the judicial system fits into South African democracy; *Understand how acts are put in place; *Understand how acts are enforced; *Understand the court system, from magistrate to the Constitutional Court; *Introduction to the Government Gazette, Hansard, Acts and Court Reports; *Introduction to Contempt of Court; and *Influence of Constitution and the Bill of Rights on the legal system as a whole.
