Dans van die Vlamme: ’n vurige MidsomernagdroomBalmy midsummer night's entertainment takes on a feisty innovative turn this summer with the Dans van die Vlamme (Dance of the Flames) on December 14, 21 and 23 at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl. Well-known fire troupe, The Psychedelic Theatre, presents an extraordinary fire theatre performance based on Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. The unique full-length show comes complete with a narrator, vocals, remarkable choreography and sumptuous costumes. The two-act work incorporates performance media in addition to the usual fire-dance formats, and has a duration of approximately 90 minutes, including interval. The Psychedelic Theatre comprises seven professional performers, all with extensive performance experience, from physical theatre to television and circus arts. Another exciting addition is well-known Paarl opera singer Jo-Nette Le Kay, who has just returned from performing in Germany and Switzerland. The show starts at 20:00 at the Tuinteater theatre on the lawns of the Taalmonument overlooking the Paarl valley. The setting makes a perfect background for pre-show sun-downers and a family picnic. Bring your own picnic supper to share with friends and family on the lawns. Pre-ordered picnic hampers are available from the monument's coffee shop Volksmond (tel. 021 863 2800), which will also be open for pre-show snacks and drinks. Whatever you choose to do before the show, don't forget your picnic blankets/cushions and warm wraps against the potential evening chill; plus a hearty appetite for fun. Pre-booking is recommended as seating is limited. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or from Gypsy outlets in Stellenbosch, Long street (Cape Town), and Kalk Bay, or at the Taalmonument. Prices are R50 for children under 12, R100 for adults. Safe parking is available and access is controlled. No dogs or fires are allowed. If the weather is bad, the performance will be cancelled.
