Full-moon picnic at the Taalmonument

These picnics are enjoyed by local as well as international visitors for the sunset and night-time views of the valley.

The first picnic of the season will take place on Saturday, 27 October (sunset 19:10, moonrise 17:13). This is three days before full moon, but the moon will already be more than 96.4% full. There will be guided tours of the monument at 18:30 and 19:30. The monument will be open until 22:00.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets or they can order one from Volksmond Coffee Shop (tel. 021 863 2800 or volksmond@taalmonument.co.za). Volksmond will be open until 22:00 for coffee and light refreshments.

Entrance fees at the gate are R15 for adults, R10 for students and R5 for children. No booking required. Visitors are reminded to bring a torch and warm clothes. No dogs and fires are allowed. Safe parking is available and access is controlled.

A new addition to this year's full-moon picnics is a photo competition with various prizes to be won.

Full-moon picnics are also scheduled for Friday, 30 November (sunset 19:42, moonrise 21:15) and on Friday, 28 December (sunset 20:00, moonrise 19:57).
