Concerto Festival with UP Symphony Orchestra

The year is sadly drawing to close for the University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra, but it promises to end on a high note with their annual concerto festival entitled Cosy Concerto Cocktails. On 11 October 2012 the University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra invites you to join them in celebrating the remarkable, youthful talent found in the midst of the ensemble.

The programme will feature full concerti as well as individual movements and promises an effervescent blend from Mozart to Mancini and a varied panoply of instruments showcasing the diverse nature of a symphony orchestra and its players.

From the wind section, Alexander Urban, the principal trumpet of the orchestra, will be performing the fanfare-like first movement from Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet in E-flat. Anthony Cloete, the principal clarinet, will render the first movement of Crusell's Concerto Opus 5 followed by the principal flautist, Renée Hartzenburg's performance of Mozart's Second Flute Concerto.

The students who fill the ranks of the University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra display numerous talents in many different fields, coming from various departments of the University. They often show remarkable aptitude for and dazzling ease on multiple instruments. Two such performers from the orchestra includes Gianfranco Vizzini, who plays flute and piccolo, breathtakingly singing Sbricccoli's Il Mondo, and Simon du Toit, a violinist in the orchestra, performing Franz Liszt's Hungarian Fantasy on piano.

From the string section audiences can expect the thrilling Hungarian Rhapsody for Solo Cello composed by Popper and performed by Laetitia van Wyk, the principal cellist. Friederike Scholtz, a player in the viola section, will be offering her rendition of the JC Bach/Casadesus Concertino for Viola. Sung-Ha Choi, a violinist in the orchestra, will perform the First Movement from Mozart's Second Violin Concerto.

The evening will be spiced with a smattering of pink cocktail jazz: a humorous rendition of Henri Mancini's theme, The Pink Panther, with Eric Rycroft on the podium.

The concerto festival will be held on 11 October 2012 at 19:00 in the Musaion, University of Pretoria Main Campus. Tickets will be on sale at the door at R80,00 for adults and R60,00 for students and pensioners. Please contact 012 420 4183/2947 or email upso@up.ac.za for more information.
