Hear for life

Dr Duane Mol speaks on the subject "Hearing for Life" at the Origins Centre on WITS University East Campus on Wednesday 26 September 2012 @18:30

Dr Mol qualified at the University of the Free State as an Otorhinolaryngologist (Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist) in 2003. Duane is one of the Surgeons assisting in the "Hear for Life' Cochlea Implant Programme for needy children and adults. He is also the South African representative for the LION (Live International Otorhinolaryngology Network) foundation.

In this world of on-going technological breakthroughs, it is amazing to look back at the intricate function of our own human technology and marvel at how it continues to perform better than any electrical equivalent.

This talk looks at the perfectly designed hearing instrument, the ear, and highlights the lesser known facts that make it so well suited to its function. It is often said that it is probably worse to be blind than deaf - I beg to differ! Blindness makes you rely on others, which forces you to form many social relationships, making blind people great communicators. For the deaf, sadly it is a lonely world, often socially osctracised, and one in which it is so easy to slip into the backdrop of life. Socially, deaf people struggle so much more and usually develop an introvert outlook on life.

But deafness can be cured!!! Unlike blindness which is still difficult to restore electronically, the introduction of Cochlea Implants and on-going technological advances in this field make deafness, in almost all cases, now curable.

I am very privileged to be working in this field and cannot wait to share some of the exciting aspects that makes these advances change lives forever - Dr Duane Mol
