The Marine Risk and Safety Conference 2013

Turning the Maritime Industry around.

The marine and shipping sector has changed radically over both the long and short term, but ships and ports continue to play a vital, and growing, role in the movement of goods around the world.

Recovering from the challenges of a global recession and a drop in world trade, ports are continuing to need to adapt to changes in trades and vessel sizes, increasing competition and different ownership models delivered by increasing private sector involvement. Ports are ever more challenged by the requirements of balancing accountability and responsibility against the necessities of competing for business. This conference is structured around the themes of the role of ports within international trade, shipping and logistics, managing harbour operations, managing port property, managing terminal operators, and related management knowledge and skills.

Today's port managers are responsible as landlords for providing and managing many port services. These usually include the safe movement and berthing of vessels, as well as providing quay and land facilities for cargo terminal operations, managing the port real estate and marine environment, whilst ensuring safety and boundary security are maintained. Further services also include working with partners to ensure hinterland transport connections are efficient, liaising with third parties such as terminal and shipping line customers, developing the port estate to reflect customer requirements, attracting new terminal business, working with terminals to attract new cargo business and general management functions. All these activities ensure it is a varied, interesting and challenging occupation.

These changes need competent and highly trained managers and professionals with deeper knowledge of the industry to enable them to meet their day-to-day challenges. This conference seeks to address some of these challenges being faced by maritime practitioners on regular bases. This is your opportunity to obtain the tools and expertise required to efficiently and effectively develops a sound, "best practice" approach to operations, and increase jobs in the industry.
