The first hip hop Kaslam AwardsThis year the first-ever Hip Hop Kaslam Awards will recognise the achievements of Spaza artists over the years, in a ceremony which will feature performances by prominent artists and the presentation of awards. Since the first Xhosa hip hop album, NY 160, was released by four-man group Black G Flow in 2000, the face of hip hop music in Cape Town was transformed. The new style of rapping in one's own language was created in 1995 by legendary emcee Archie "Dat" Sopazi and evolved into what has become known as Spaza today: a combination of Xhosa, tsotsi-taal and various other indigenous languages. Spaza has become an urban movement of young and inspired vernacular rappers, singers and poets. Artists like the nationally renowned Driemanskap, the exceptionally gifted duo Jargon and the multi-talented Sugah lare only a few of the great number of rappers who have hit the scene in South Africa over the last 17 years. Hip Hop Kaslam is an event where Spaza emcees perform in their indigenous languages, paying tribute to their heritage through hip-hop music, poetry, song and dance. This musical celebration of home-brewed hip hop from ekasi (the township) features a jam-packed programme led by local legends of this genre, who rap about life ekasi in the language of ekasi. The Hip Hop Kaslam Awards will award artists, beatmakers and producers in nine categories including Best Album, Best Male and Female Artist, Best Group, Best Beatmaker, Best Video, Best Performer and Best Song. The best song and performer awards will be decided and voted upon by the audience on the night. Tickets to the Hip Hop Kaslam Awards are just R40 at any Computicket, Shoprite or Checkers.
