Content: Stimulate your mind and learn how to write news features and develop your writing skills to a new level. Learn how to write the different types of features, and bring new perspectives to your style of writing.
Feature writing is a distinctive form of news writing and certain types of features help put the news into context. Popular feature styles included in the course are service pieces, profiles, trend stories, news backgrounders, essays and brighteners.
The workshop includes planning the writing, interviewing techniques, finding the angle, researching the facts, finding the angle, and sourcing voices to make your piece come alive. It covers different styles of writing on which news feature writing is based. It contains simple mnemonics for planning and writing any type of feature story.
Objective: At the end of the workshop delegates should know and understand:
the scope of feature writing and
be able to write a variety of different features for newspapers or other media platforms.
Who should attend: The workshop will improve the writing skills of journalists from newspapers, magazines and internet publications. It is preferable that delegates have a background in journalism or news training to benefit from the content.
What to bring: Delegates are required to bring their laptops, a recent feature story they have written, and to come with an open mind and a willingness to enhance their passion for the written word.
