Calling all dramatists to turn words into action

A significant force of creativity and innovative opportunities to celebrate the art of storytelling and the craft of writing is going to alter the prospects for writers with The Writing Studio and the Performing Arts Network of South Africa (PANSA) teaming up to present workshops, story and play readings at the studio in Woodstock, Cape Town.

First up is The Drama Of Writing A Play workshop that is held over five Saturday mornings from 10am until 1pm from June 23, at PANSA offices Liquidlime Studios, 3B Beach Road, Woodstock.

This unique workshop for aspirant dramatists explores the magic of live theatre, the importance of plays in society, and examines the world of contemporary and classic theatre and musical theatre.

Writers will examine the raw material of drama, the art of the drama, what it takes to be a dramatist in South Africa, and how to get your plays on to the stage.

During the workshop the dramatists will look at how to plot the action, explore the theme of the drama, and develop characters and how to write dialogue.

The Drama of Writing a Play looks at the relationship between the dramatist and actors, as well as working with directors and producers to turn words into action.

At the final session of the workshop on July 14 a scene from the plays will be performed and evaluated. This session will be open to the public who can come on see a snippet of a new play in action.

The workshop is ideal for writers (and actors) who want to make a difference in the local theatre scene, and cultivate the growth of new South African plays.

The workshop is presented by Daniel Dercksen, a published playwright and screenwriter, who has been a film and theatre journalist for 30 years and has been teaching workshops in writing the past 12 years.

The cost of the workshop is R900 with special discounted rates for PANSA members. Bursaries are also offered in support of developing new writing in South Africa.
