If you're an aspiring playwright with a vivid imagination whose ideas are larger than life, The Writing Studio's new workshop The Drama of Writing a Play will turn words into action and takes place at the studio in Green Point on 5 Saturday mornings from 10am until 1pm from 16 June.
This unique workshop for aspirant dramatists explores the magic of live theatre, the importance of plays in society, and examines the world of contemporary and classic theatre and musical theatre.
Writers will examine the raw material of drama, the art of the drama, what it takes to be a dramatist in South Africa, and how to get your plays on to the stage.
During the workshop the dramatists will look at how to plot the action, explore the theme of the drama, and develop characters and how to write dialogue.
The Drama of Writing a Play looks at the relationship between the dramatist and actors, as well as working with directors and producers to turn words into action.
At the final session of the workshop on 14 July a scene from the plays will be performed and evaluated.
The workshop is ideal for writers (and actors) who want to make a difference in the local theatre scene, and cultivate the growth of new South African plays.
This practical and inspirational workshop is presented by Daniel Dercksen, a published playwright and theatre journalist, who has been teaching workshops in screenwriting, creative writing and filmmaking throughout South Africa the past 18 years.
