Surviving the South African media

Mass media, being one of the least expensive forms of marketing, is still not recognised for its efficient, cost-effective marketing communication.

It is seen as a jackal waiting to pounce and that perception has to change since media and public relations is co-dependent on one another. It should be looked at as a partnership; one that will prosper through integrity, credibility, reliably and honesty.

Why dread the media when many contributions made to business newspapers emanate from either a press release or from the public relations community. Change your perception and learn how to use a misunderstood tool by attending this workshop and receiving a copy of "Surviving the SA Media."

The content of this workshop addresses:
• Developing and maintaining sound working relationships with members of the print and broadcast media.
• Strategies to increase success rates when selling stories.
• Knowledge and skills to approach the media professionally, but also with confidence.

About the speaker:
Marion Scher has been one of South Africa's top freelance journalists for the last 24 years, writing for many leading publications such as Fairlady, True Love, Cosmopolitan, Style, Men's Health and Sunday Times Lifestyle, to name a few. In 2005 she was awarded the prestigious Rosalynn Carter Award for Mental Health Journalism from the Carter Center in Atlanta, USA. She is currently a member of its South African Advisory Board.
Marion regards the journalism students she taught during her 14 years as a lecturer, many of whom today hold senior positions, as one of her biggest contributions to the media.

Marion's varied career has also seen her employed as a producer and researcher by the SABC, and today she trains at CNBC Africa and 702 Talk Radio and 567 Cape Talk.

She acts as media consultant to many of South Africa's top companies and also runs training courses on media-related subjects, from writing skills to handling media interviews.
