John Matisonn - The Arab revolution of 2011
Distinguished journalist John Matisonn recently returned from a stint with the United Nations in Afghanistan where he was an adviser on media strategy as that country attempted to democratise. He will be speaking to the club on "the Arab revolution of 2011" - how it happened and what it means.
He was project co-ordinator during last year's Afghan parliamentary elections and previously served as electoral media commission adviser for the presidential election the previous year. He previously served as electoral media commission chairman for the provincial council polls.
Matisonn, who is a member of the club, was founder and editorial director of THISDAY, a national newspaper which ran for about a year in the early part of this century. Previously he held various posts as parliamentary correspondent and councillor for the Independent Broadcasting Authority.
He spent many years in the United States serving variously as Washington DC correspondent for the Rand Daily Mail, the Cape Times, Sunday Times and the morning newspapers in SA and editor of the Washington Report on Africa in the mid-1980s.
