A conference on the roles and responsibilities of Africa's media

In a bid to enrich the debate on media rights and regulation, and to encourage a broader African continental perspective, the South African National Editors' Forum and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) Journalism Department are hosting a two-day gathering.

Topics for discussion:

· The Right to Know and Access to Information;

· Models of Regulation;

· Issues in self-regulation;

· Transformation and democratization in the media;

· The role of government;

· Mechanisms of Accountability.

Participants have been invited from 19 African countries from the ranks of government, editors, regulators and civil society, as well as a member of the British Press Council and a Canadian Information and Privacy Commissioner.
