International Diabetes Day - Diabetes screening

We would like to invite you to a free health screening session to test your glucose levels

Are you one of the 1,7 million South African diabetics?

Seven million people worldwide are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes each year. There are currently some 285 million diabetics and it is predicted that 435 million people will suffer from diabetes by 2030.

Diabetes is a condition where the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood is too high. It is a socalled "disease of lifestyle", which means that it can be caused by the way we live. It cannot be cured.

80% of diabetics die of heart disease and about 50% have a high cholesterol level. Diabetes also affects other parts of the body:

  • Eyes - cataracts and retinopathy (gradual degradation of the eye) that may lead to blindness
  • Kidneys - kidney disease and failure
  • Nerves - neuropathy (gradual degradation of the nerves)
  • Feet - ulcers, infections, gangrene, etc.

Knowing about diabetes can help you live a longer, healthier lifestyle. Possible causes of diabetes include: family history, lack of exercise, being overweight and an unhealthy diet.
