Conference on Africa’s Corporate Governance Issues

Global rankings in democracy and governance usually position African countries towards the bottom of the scale on both accounts, and are often used to explain Africa's lack of development, extreme poverty and inability to attract foreign investment.

As part of an effort to address this topic, the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) and the Unit for Corporate Governance in Africa is hosting the Building a Better Life for All conference, which takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 20 - 21 April 2010.

The conference brings together international and local corporations, academics and representatives of civil society to debate and reflect on the importance of good governance for a sustainable African future. It also presents an ideal opportunity to focus on existing standards and case studies, and to explore innovative and practical solutions for the continent.

Some of the country's leading commentators on both the economy and governance issues will also be speaking at the conference, including, among others:

• Gill Marcus, Governor of the Reserve Bank
• Bobby Godsell, Co-chairman of Business Leadership
• Prof Bob Garratt, Chairman of the Unit for Corporate Governance in Africa
• Prof Oliver Williams, UN Global Compact Foundation Board member

The keynote address will be provided via video link by Nobel Peace Prize winner, former under-secretary of the United Nations and former president of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari.
